NCS playoffs get serious

Area high school baseball and softball get serious today and Saturday as the North Coast Section playoffs move into the second round.

This afternoon at Casa Grande High School, the Casa Grande baseball team hosts Cardinal Newman in a second round Division 2 game. Casa Grande (25-2), the No. 1 seed, defeated Pinole Valley, 4-1, in the first round, while Cardinal Newman (14-12), the No. 4 seed, topped Alameda, 4-1. The teams, both from the North Bay League, have already played one another four times, with Casa winning three by a single run and Cardinal Newman once by two runs.

Saturday at 1 p.m. St. Vincent will host Athenian School in a second-round Division 5 game. St. Vincent (18-4), the No. 4 seed, defeated San Francisco University, 8-3, in its first game while Athenian School (11-7) from Danville, the No. 5 seed, edged Bay School of San Francisco, 4-3.

Petaluma's T-Girls (24-1), the No. 1 seed in the Division 2 softball playoffs, defeated San Lorenzo, 7-0, in their opener and now move into a 4 p.m. home game this afternoon against Livermore (14-11), a 10-0 winner over Rancho Cotate in the first round.

St. Vincent's girls (14-8), the No. 2 seed in Division 5, make their NCS debut this evening at 4 p.m. on their home diamond against St. Joseph Notre Dame (13-7), an 8-2 winner over Urban, in the first round.

The Casa Grande girls (13-11) are finished after losing a tough 2-0 game to Pinole Valley (20-5) in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.
