Casa girls beat a league foe in tournament

The Casa Grande High school girls basketball team sandwiched a loss between two impressive victories in the East Bay vs. North Bay Challenge Tournament played at Acalanes High School last weekend.

The Gauchos opened with a 47-37 win over Concord. Brook Santander scored 13 points to lead Casa Grande with Meagan Burke and Cassidy McKinney adding eight points each. Kayla Ryan scored five points and also grabbed eight rebounds while dishing off three assists.

Casa Grande led, 24-12, at the half and blew the game open with a 17-point third quarter. Concord made a late run, scoring 17 points in the final period, but could not overcome the big Casa lead.

The Gauchos lost their second game to North Bay League foe Windsor, 42-30, but bounced back to defeat another NBL foe, Maria Carrillo, 32-16. Santander scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds for the Gauchos. Angela Llaverias had an excellent all-around game with seven rebounds, four steals and four blocked shots.

Casa's defense held Maria Carrillo to eight points in the first half.

Now 4-2 for the season, the Gauchos play in the West Coast Jamboree this week, opening Thursday against Pleasant Valley from Chico.
