By a 7-0 vote late Monday night, council members accepted a recommendation from health officials to limit second-hand smoke exposure, cigarette butt litter and unsafe role models for children.

The ban will take effect some time in August. The exact date was not immediately available.

Signs will warn smokers not to light up and violators will face fines for a first offense of $100.

All city parks, including public open spaces such as Putnam Plaza, will be covered by the ban.

Parking lots serving parks will be exempt.
