Petaluma police received three statewide awards Wednesday for their safe-driving enforcement efforts last year.
"In Petaluma, you do some very extraordinary things," said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow, who named the department the top agency among thousands in the state participating in the California Law Enforcement Challenge.
The department also was honored as the top agency to combat impaired driving, the fourth time the city has won the award.
Sgt. Ken Savano, who leads the department's traffic enforcement team, was individually honored for his efforts to keep impaired drivers off the road and to educate the public about road safety.
Among other programs, Savano leads Avoid the 13, an enforcement effort that uses all of the county's jurisdictions in focused operations targeting DUI drivers. He has also helped win several grants that pay for efforts to arrest repeat DUI drivers and those violating their probation by continuing to drink or drive without proper licenses.
