Drivers in and around Petaluma can expect road closures and detours at SMART railroad crossings starting on Friday, Aug. 24.
The closures come as SMART removes old tracks and installs new ones at numerous railroad grade crossings in order to prepare for the new commuter rail service between Santa Rosa and San Rafael.
As a result, the crossings below are tentatively set to be closed on the following schedule, created from information provided by the Petaluma Police Department and the SMART contractor, Stacy Witbeck/Herzog :
Friday, Aug. 24 — Saturday, Aug. 25: Adobe Road crossing closed starting at 6 p.m. Friday through an undetermined time on Saturday.
Tuesday, Aug. 28 — Thursday, Aug. 30: East Railroad Avenue crossing closed.
Friday, Aug. 7 —?Saturday, Aug. 8: Main Street in Penngrove at crossing closed.
Tuesday, Sept. 11 — Thursday, Sept. 13: Corona Road at crossing closed.
Tuesday, Sept. 18 —?Thursday, Sept. 20 — Payran Street at crossing closed.
Friday, Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. — Saturday, Sept. 22: South Point Boulevard at crossing closed.
Tuesday, Sept. 25 — Thursday, Sept. 27: Washington Street at crossing closed.
Monday, OCt. 1 — Wednesday, Oct. 3: D Street at crossing closed.
Police and SMART are encouraging drivers to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time. There will be electronic message boards at each crossing and detour signs showing alternate routes.
