‘Big Eyes Show’

Tribute art show to the Keanes opens March 2|

The Back House Gallery hosts an opening reception for “The Big Eyes Show” from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 21.

The community art show, which is a tribute to artists Walter and Margaret Keane, features work by local artists who were asked so submit art reflecting of the theme “big eyes.”

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Keanes produced an enormously successful body of work featuring large eyed waifs that were among the first pieces of modern art produced for a mass audience. There have been many allegations and accusations about which of them was responsible for the art. History shows us that Margaret was the actual painter of many of the images, but it’s also pretty certain that they wouldn’t have gotten the national and international exposure they received without Walter’s irrepressible sales drive.

The art will be on display through March. The Back House Gallery is located at Heebe Jeebe, 46 Kentucky St.
