Turning sidewalks into art

Show off your skills at the Chalk Art Competition|

The Aqus Community and the Petaluma Downtown Association are accepting registration for the the fourth annual Petaluma Art & Garden Festival Chalk Art Competition taking place downtown on July 12.

The competition is open to all ages and levels of artists and is held on B Street between Fourth and Fifth streets (by the Petaluma Historical Library & Museum).

The deadline to register for the contest is July 6. Walk-ins will only be accepted if space is available.

Drawing spaces and entry fees for the three levels of competition are as follows.

n Children - 4-by-4-foot space. $5 entry fee

n Amateurs - 4-by-six-foot space. $10 entry fee.

n Professionals - 4-by-six-foot space. $15 entry fee.

The winners will be selected by the public. Prizes will be awarded for the first place in each category.

Participants are responsible for bringing their own supplies. Other items artists should bring are water spray bottles, rags, something to sit on, a hat, sunscreen, whisk broom and drinking water. Only solid, non-toxic chalk pastels are allowed. No oil pastels or paint of any kind is permitted. Use of any disallowed material will subject the participant to a clean up fee by the City of Petaluma.

All chalk art images should be family friendly. No lewd, political or commercial images are allowed. No stenciling is allowed.

Check in for the competition begins at 10:30 a.m. July 12. Drawing time will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Voting by the public will end at 3:30 p.m. Winners will be announced at 4 p.m.
