Wrist-wrestling champion makes spontaneous pilgrimage to Petaluma: David Quist of Petaluma has lived in town for eight years. He and his wife have often passed the sculpture of Bill Soberanes at the corner of Washington and Petaluma Boulevard and heard the occasional story about Petaluma’s wrist-wrestling history. Until a few weeks ago, he says, those were just “interesting footnotes.”

“As a local wine tour guide,” he recently wrote to The Buzz, “I picked up a couple from the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn in late August. Sam and Rhonda Coy. They wanted to visit three wineries on Westside Road.”

As Quist was driving the couple out of Sonoma, towards 101, he mentioned that the route would take them through his hometown of Petaluma.

“Sam perked up and said, ‘Do you know anything about arm wrestling?’ ” recalls Quist. “I said what little I knew regarding the sculpture. He told me that in 1994, he was the Number Three arm wrestler, losing to Number One, John Bersink, a 212 lb. legend. Number Two was Eric Woelfel.”

Though Petaluma is known to many as the Wrist Wrestling Capital of the World, the competition that Sam Coy described took place down in Southern California.

“This was the first time he’d been in Northern California,” Quist says, noting that he made sure to take a short detour to the corner of Washington and Petaluma Boulevard. “Sam was excited to the see the sculpture,” he says.
