The Buzz: Fundraisers planned for Richie Lemos, Ryder’s cult movie gets TV reboot, and more

News and notes from around Petaluma|

Fundraisers planned for Richie Lemos, Petaluma teacher who suffered operating room heart attack: When 37-year-old Richie Lemos, a teacher at Kenilworth Junior High, went in for a routine stent operation following a mild heart attack, his friends and family assumed he’d be sent home within a day or so, as is usually the case. When his heart stopped during the procedure, followed by several days on life support, his family feared the worst. Fortunately, as of this writing, Lemos appears to be recovering, but the road ahead will be long - and expensive. To assist in paying some of his medical bills, a GoFundMe campaign (GoFundMe.com) has been established to raise $10,000. So far, more than $7,000 has been pledged, and a fundraiser at Jameson’s Roaring Donkey has been planned for Saturday, Jan. 27 beginning at noon. There will be live music, live painting, a silent auction, and special drinks, the proceeds from which will go to support Lemos’ recovery. The event is all-ages until 7 p.m.?146 Kentucky St. Lemos’ friends, family, students and former students.

Garden Club tends roses on Martin Luther King Day: According to Don Curry, of the Petaluma Garden Club, everything’s coming up roses after the club’s annual trip to Wickerhsam Park - known for its trellises covered in roses. On Monday, Jan. 15, the club celebrated Martin Luther King Day by bringing their clippers and trimming bags out to the park for a couple of highly productive hours of pruning and cutting and general rose care. The annual event drew nine members.

“Heathers,” featuring former Petaluman Winona Ryder, gets reboot for television: Ever since Petaluma High graduate Winona Ryder, Class of ’89, made a name for herself in such films as “Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands,” and “Heathers,” the eccentric movie star has held a special place in the hearts of many Petalumans. Though her career definitely slowed down there for a while, her mighty reemergence in the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things” has delighted those locals who never stopped rooting for Winona to regain her status as Petaluma High’s most famous and quirkily lovable graduate. So, even though she will apparently have nothing to do with Paramount TV’s upcoming series reboot of the dark-comedy high school flick “Heathers” - easily one of Ryder’s most enduring and off-the-wall cult-movies - it’s safe to assume that many Petaluma folks will be checking it out to see if the new version is anywhere near as memorable as the original. The show is set to debut on March 7.
