The Buzz: Eastwood inspires local brewery’s new beers, KPCA goes Hollywood

News and Notes from around Petaluma|

Clint Eastwood movies inspire three new 101 North beers - and the labels they carry: Petaluma’s 101 N. Brewing has announced the release of three new beers, all bearing satirically playful names reminiscent of famous Clint Eastwood westerns. Two Hops for Sister Sara is a double IPA, its moniker a gleeful play on “Two Mules for Sister Sara,” the 1970 film co-starring Shirley Mac-Laine as a nun (sort of) who enlists the aid of a gunslinger (Eastwood). Then there’s Dirty Hoppy, a North Beach style “hazy IPA” with a name that gives homage to Eastwood’s iconic “Dirty Harry” films. Just try sipping this libation without saying, “Do you feel lucky?” Bet you can’t. Finally, there’s “Escape from Alecatraz,” a California common named as a tribute to 1979’s “Escape From Alcatraz,” with a beer bottle in Eastwood’s hand in place of the chisel he gripped on the film’s original poster.

101 North debuted the first of the three last weekend, initially at a special even in the brewery’s Petaluma tap room, followed by a movie-and-beer pairing at San Francisco’s Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, where “Two Hops” was poured before a screening of “Sister Sara.” The other two releases will be unveiled over the next several months.

The labels were all designed by San Francisco’s Xander Kent, and each bottle will also bear further tributes and teases of the film that inspired it. “Two Hops for Sister Sara” is currently available at the 101 North Taproom (1304 Scott St.), in bottles and on tap, along with posters of the distinctive label art.
