A weekend of music and dance, movies and books (and lots more)|

THE THEORY

Sonoma County’s The Theory play bluesy, rocky originals with plenty of energy and a strong desire to make the world want to get up and dance. Check them out, and plan to cut a rug (possibly on an actual rug) at Rosen’s 256 North. 7 p.m. No cover. 256north.com.

FRIDAY

SOUTH COUNTRY

Catch a musical train to the land of Rhythm and Blues as harmonica player/singer Sean Parnell comes to Red Brick with his hard rocking band. 8 p.m. No cover. RedBrickRestaurants.com.

BAD MOTHER NATURE

From Sacramento, the rock band known as Bad Mother Nature released its debut EP, “Strange Weather,” earlier this year, and are hard at work recording a full LP length album. Their music is fun, frisky and infectious. Catch what they’ve got at the Twin Oaks Roadhouse, 5745 Old Redwood Hwy. First set 8:30 p.m. TwinOaksRoadhouse.com.

SATURDAY

AUTHORS: BOATS ON THE BAY

& THE WINTER SOLDIER

As part of Copperfield’s Books’ “Write in Your Own Backyard” series, Petaluma’s Cameron & Co. Books presents author Jeanne Walker Harvey, reading from and discussing her new book “Boats on the Bay,” a deliciously photo-heavy celebration of the various vessels that float about and travel across the San Francisco Bay. 2 p.m. Later the same evening, Copperfield’s hosts another of its ever-fascinating “Lit Nights,” this time with novelist Daniel Mason. His new work is “The Winter Soldier” (no, not the comic book character), a story of WWI and an idealistic medical student trying to stay sane, optimistic and alive while working in a freezing battlefield hospital in the Carpathian Mountains. 7 p.m. Copperfield’s Book Store, 140 Kentucky St.

JEFF AUSTIN BAND

Promising an evening of “full tilt, no-stone-unturned, song-driven, experimental jam-grass music,” the Jeff Austin Band comes to the Mystic Theatre by way of Colorado. A founding member of the acclaimed Yonder Mountain String Band,” Austin is a world-class mandolin player, who’s shared the stage with such bluegrass legends as Sam Bush, Earle Scruggs, Jerry Douglas and Del McCoury. 8:30 p.m., $18. Mystic Theatre, 21 N. Petaluma Blvd.

SUNDAY

‘REAR WINDOW’

Flashback Cinema presents Hitchcock’s 1954 suspense thriller about a man (Jimmy Stewart), confined to his apartment with a broken leg, who’s become a bit obsessed with spying on his neighbors from afar – as he teams up his girlfriend (Grace Kelly) to determine whether a mysterious salesman across the way (Raymond Burr) has or hasn’t murdered his wife. 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Boulevard Cinemas, 200 C St. The movie screens again at the same times on Wednesday. Cinemawest.com.

FLAMENCO! LIVE!

There is a good reason that there are two exclamation points in the name “Flamenco! Live!” and if there were a logical way to work in a third, it would not be undeserved. Bringing the “fury and passion of Spain’s legendary Gypsies” to the Big Easy stage, this high-octane music and dance show features dancers Fanny Ara and Bianca Rodriguez, with guitarist Jason McGuire and acclaimed singer Roberto Zamora. 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.). $20. The Big Easy, 128 American Alley. BigEasyPetaluma.com.
