Two people were injured when their SUVs collided Tuesday on Lakeville Highway in Petaluma, according to the Petaluma Police Department.

At about 10 a.m., John Taylor, 66, of Petaluma pulled his Infiniti QX4 into traffic as he tried to turn from the South McDowell Extension and was struck by an eastbound Honda CR-V driven by Gary Welch, 59, of Cloverdale.

Both drivers were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Taylor was treated and released, while Welch was admitted to the hospital after suffering a collapsed lung and two broken ribs, according to Petaluma Police Sgt. Jim Stephenson.

Both vehicles suffered major damage, and Lakeville Highway was closed to traffic for about 30 minutes.

The accident occurred at the same intersection where a Vallejo woman died in June after a head-on collision with a driver who pleaded no contest Monday to vehicular manslaughter and other charges.
