T-Girls bomb Piner for first SCL victory

Petaluma High School's girls basketball team made no doubt about its first Sonoma County League win of the season, romping over Piner, 57-20, Tuesday night.

The game wasn't even as close as the final score indicates. Petaluma led at the half, 30-6, and went into the final quarter with a 46-10 lead before reserves finished out the contest.

From the Petaluma perspective, the win was badly needed after two tough SCL losses. It was also nice for T-Girls coach Doug Johnson to give all his players a large amount of playing time.

Eleven T-Girls contributed to the scoring, led by Allison Scranton with 13. The 6-foot Scranton was absolutely dominant under the basket. In the third quarter, when Johnson gave his starting players playing time before pulling them for the entire final period, Scranton dropped in four baskets, never having to move no further than two-feet from the basket for her points.

There was all kinds of help. Sophomore Emily Corda came off the bench to play a solid all-around game, and finished with eight points. Amy Keen added two. Jenna Teagarden tallied five, Cassie Baddeley counted four, Jordyn Bacon bucketed four. Olivia Baldwin scored two. Sophia Bihn scored six. Maddie Mehciz counted seven, Emily Cheda counted six and Lisa Guptill scored six.

The game was in sharp contrast to Petaluma's Friday night game, a 54-53 loss to Analy.

That game was a tough physical battle from the start, with each team called for 20-plus fouls. It was also intense and close with emotions running high and never more than five points separating the teams. The T-Girls led 53-51 when Jenna Petry hit a short shot for Analy with just nine seconds left and was fouled. She calmly canned the free throw to give Analy the win.

Allison Scranton led Petaluma with 12 points, with Lisa Guptil adding 10.

Petry paced Analy with 13 points.

Hunter, Taylor Lehmann and Sina Fuliava each scoring 10.

Petaluma is now 8-7 overall going into its Wednesday game at Healdsburg.
