Waugh names permanent replacement for Mahoney

Waugh School District in Petaluma has named Robert Cmelak as the new superintendent of the district and principal of Corona Creek Elementary School. Cmelak is slated to take over for interim superintendent Stephanie Capps on Aug. 15.

Cmelak spent a decade as an elementary school teacher before taking assistant principal and principal positions in the Riverside Unified School District. For the past three years, he has served as principal of Judson and Brown Elementary School in Riverside, according to Waugh district officials.

He was named Teacher of the Year for the Jurupa Unified School District in Riverside and won the Leadership Award of the Year for the Redlands Unified District in southern California.

His annual salary is $133,000.

Cmelak replaces Scott Mahoney who spent nearly two decades in the district but left this summer to take over the superintendent post of Ross School District in Marin County.
