Safety training at Sonoma County rail crossings this week

North Bay firefighters, police, sheriff's deputies and Highway Patrol officers will get railroad safety training this week as freight service gears up on the Northwestern Pacific Railroad.

The "Operation Lifesaver" training is being offered by NWP Co., which operates freight trains in Sonoma, Napa and Marin counties.

Rail cargo service resumed last month after a 10-year absence.

Training will start Wednesday and continue through Aug. 16.

"Our goal is to have clear lines of communication with first responders in each of the cities along the rail line," NWP Co. general manager Jake Park said.

The rail line bisects Novato, Petaluma, Cotati, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa and Windsor.

Information about the training schedule is available from the North Coast Railroad Authority at 463-3280.
