East D St. bike route meeting delayed

Plans for a City Council vote on the proposal for a bike boulevard on East D Street have been delayed and more community meetings have been scheduled after concerns about the project surfaced from neighbors.

The council was originally planning to vote on the project at its meeting this past Monday. The plan calls for a one-year pilot that will test traffic-calming measures to encourage biking and traffic reduction on the road. Neighbors have organized opposition, saying that removing stop signs and installing traffic circles will create dangerous conditions.

According to city officials, two meetings may be scheduled before the council weighs in - a demonstration of the traffic circles using traffic cones, and a meeting for gathering community input. Dates for the meetings have not yet been set.
