Petaluma Valley Hospital has received an "A" grade for safety from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other purchasers of health benefits.
The high mark was given in the latest update to the "Hospital Safety Score" which assigns grades of A through F to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections.
The score was compiled with input from national experts on patient safety and is meant to inform the public.
"The &‘A' grade from Leapfrog for our hospital demonstrates our commitment to patient safety," said Jane Read, Vice President of Operations at Petaluma Valley Hospital in a statement Wednesday.
This is not the first award for safety Petaluma Valley Hospital has received recently. About one year ago the Joint Commission - the organization that accredits major hospitals across the nation - ranked Petaluma Valley in the top 7 percent of hospitals in the nation in quality measures.
Some other nearby hospital grades from The Leapfrog Group include "A" grades for Kaiser Foundation Hospitals in Santa Rosa and San Rafael, "B" grades for Novato Community Hospital, Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and Palm Drive Hospital in Sebastopol, and a "C" grade for Sutter West Bay Hospital in Santa Rosa.
