Firefighters, city agree to two-tier contract

The firefighters Local 1415 union appears set to join the police officers' union in agreeing to two-tiered pension reform.

At its July 16 meeting, the City Council will consider approving the union's new, one-year contract, which pushes back the retirement age for new Fire Department hires from 50 to 55, among other things.

"Considering the financial times and the city's need to discuss pension reform, I think it's a fair agreement," said union representative Ken Dick.

The agreement will result in no immediate savings for the city until a significant number of new firefighters have been hired.
