Yet another denial for Walgreens drive-thru

It was the same story, different day for the proposed Walgreens project, as planning commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to deny construction of the drive-thru pharmacy, which would be located at the corner of North McDowell Boulevard and Lynch Creek Way.

The Walgreens pharmacy, which was first proposed by the Petaluma Health Care District in May of last year, was presented Tuesday night with no new features or modifications since the last planning commission review in mid-October. Without any public comment or commission discussion, each of the four resolutions pertaining to the denial of the Walgreens development were passed unanimously, with Commissioner Jennifer Pierre and Petaluma City Council liaison Kathy Miller absent.

The resolutions included denial of two zoning amendments that would allow exceptions to the city’s current drive-thru moratorium and would allow the rezoning of the site from business park to mixed use. The commission also recommended that the city council deny general plan amendments that would allow a drive-thru and rezoning of the land.

The health care district says the drive-thru is needed for elderly and sick residents who can’t easily get out of their cars and wait in line for medication - but while the Petaluma City Council has showed support for the project, the planning commission has repeatedly denied it.

The Walgreens saga will continue when it comes before city council members at a later date. An unofficial vote in June showed a council majority favored the drive-thru.
