For the fifth consecutive year, the Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, in an effort spearheaded by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and supported by the California Collegiate Athletic Association is collecting canned foods until Sunday. Members of SAAC will be on hand on to accept goods on campus and at basketball games on behalf of NOAH, a local food pantry that benefits the communities of Rohnert Park, Cotati, and Penngrove.

All fans who bring cans to the Sonoma State basketball games on Saturday or Sunday will receive free admission. In addition, anyone who brings two cans to Michael’s Sourdough Sandwiches in Rohnert Park will get a free sandwich with the purchase of one.

Last year, Sonoma State finished second among all CCAA institutions in cans collected with 1,374. They hope to hit 2,000 this time around. As a whole, the CCAA donated more than 6,300 cans to local shelters, an increase of more than 1,300 cans from the year before.

NOAH (Neighbors Organized Against Hunger) was founded in 2005. It is now one of the largest food pantries in Sonoma County, last year distributing nearly 250,000 pounds of food.
