Santa Rosa Junior College will celebrate Larry Bertolini Day Under The Oaks on May 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the campus, located at 1501 Mendocino Ave.

Children will be introduced to the excitement of higher education, adults can learn about new and compelling career paths and all can explore the college’s many academic, cultural and student life offerings. Parking and admission is free. No pets are allowed.

Information on activities, performances, sponsors, food trucks, photos from previous Days Under the Oaks and more are available at www.santarosa.edu/duo.

The open house and community education fair extends throughout the Santa Rosa campus. Booths will offer food, hands-on activities, displays, demonstrations, shows and fun for the whole family.

More than 175 booths and over 20 performances and demonstrations will offer a broad look at education and culture at SRJC.

Performances include hula, hip hop dance, jazz music, Polynesian and rhythm and blues music featuring Faith Ako, semi-acoustic quartet Now and Zen, and the traditional Lion Parade and cultural performance by the Redwood Empire Chinese Association.

Popular and exciting demonstrations include the chemistry and physics light shows, Planetarium shows, and culinary arts cooking demos.

The Native American Spring Celebration is a perennial favorite, with arts, crafts, dancing. Native American food will be available for sale. The SRJC Alumni & Friends are hosting a photography exhibit and competition.

Major sponsors for the event are Exchange Bank, Redwood Credit Union, American AgCredit and Bella Rosa Coffee. In-kind sponsors include Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, which is providing a secure bike parking area, and Santa Rosa Recycling and Collection.

New this year, the Bear Cub Athletic Trust is sponsoring a 3K fun run and there is a juried art exhibit and competition. Once again this year, many food trucks are providing food for attendees with partial proceeds to benefit student clubs.

The Culinary Arts Department will be selling popular wood-fired pizza and strawberry shortcake. Other departments offer drinks, tacos, cotton candy, hot dogs and more.

Students will be able to meet with counselors and register for summer classes.

Parents and high school students can meet friendly faculty and staff who will show them how inspiring and affordable college can be. Available information will include registration, scholarships, financial aid and other assistance to make an SRJC education possible for all.

Exhibits and demonstrations from instructional departments and clubs range from administration of justice to boxing, from digital media and computer studies to older adults.

Families can go into labs and classrooms, participate in activities, visit outside displays and exhibits, and talk to educators who enthusiastically share their expertise with students. Young children will enjoy the Shone Farm petting zoo, story time, face painting, and jumpy houses.

The event is named in honor of the late former SRJC trustee and Day Under The Oaks co-founder, Larry Bertolini, who arranged the annual farm animal petting zoo.
