Petaluma police arrested a 44-year-old Placerville man for burglary and resisting arrest Thursday afternoon after a Petaluma woman found the unknown man asleep on her downstairs couch, according to the Petaluma Police Department.

The woman had been asleep upstairs, and emerged from her bedroom to find the man on her couch, according to the police. After police directed the woman to flee from her front door on the 1600 block of Caulfield Lane, the suspect, James Adams, woke up and ran from the rear of the house. Adams kicked through a fence and entered a back yard on Putnam Way, where officers twice used a Taser to subdue him, according to police.

While police noted burglary as the likely motive, an immediate investigation suggested that the man had only eaten the woman’s food before falling asleep, the police said.

Police transported the suspect to a local hospital for a routine medical evaluation. Neither the suspect nor the officers were injured.

Adams has been arrested several times in the past in both California and Oregon for crimes including battery on a peace officer, felony DUI and being under the influence of a controlled substance. It appeared that he entered the home while the woman was asleep, and no sign of forced entry was found, according to police.

Nothing was found missing other than the woman’s food, according to police. Adams will be transported to Sonoma County Jail and held on a $30,000 bail.
