REG gymnasts bring home truck load of state medals

In the sport of gymnastics, March is state championship meet month. The Redwood Empire Gymnastics girls and boys teams had their moment in the spotlight, capturing many high honors at their respective state championship meets.

The optional girls teams, consisting of level 6 to level 10 athletes, proved at their state championships meet why Redwood Empire Gymnastics is on the rise as one of the top gymnastics clubs in Northern California.

The level 8-10’s traveled to Roseville for their state championship meet.

In Level 8 competition, Audrey Brostrom competed in the Junior D age group and placed ninth on the Floor with a 8.975. This was Brostrom’s first season as a Level 8 athlete.

In the level 9 competition, Redwood Empire Gymnastics took a team of 10 athletes, and accomplished a feat never before done by a REG girls Level 9 team at REG. The team made REG history by becoming the fourth-best overall team in Northern California.

The competition included more than 30 teams in Northern California. Coaches Maureen Koehler, Greta Leach and Eric van der Meer were very proud of their team’s achievements this season.

Devyn Valuch, a Junior A, received eighth overall in the All Around with a 35.35.

In Junior B, Camille Mantoani received third place on floor with a 9.45 and Athena Koehler was seventh on Vault with a 9.125.

In the Junior C age group, Kaylie Barrera became the All-Around state champion with a 36.825, and was also the Floor (9.30) and Bar (9.125) state champion. Kira Lim, also Junior C, was the second-place silver medalist on Bars with a 9.075, and Brooke Chandler, another Junior C, was fifth on Floor and Vault with a score of 9.025.

In the Senior B competition, LJ Webb was fifth on Floor with a 9.0 and Alex Green was third on Floor with a 9.075.

In the Senior C competition, Lehua Murata was the All Around champion with a 35.825 and was also the Beam state champion. Reily Cannon, also a Senior C, was the silver medalist on Beam with an 8.45. Cannon is REG’s graduating senior this year, and has a 5.0 grade point average.

Jasmine Henley competed in her first Level 10 state competition as a Senior A. Henley received an eighth on the Beam with an 8.80 and qualified for Regionals.

From the Optional team, REG qualified 11 athletes to the Regionals Championships to be held in later this month in Las Vegas. Qualified are Audrey Brostrom, Devyn Valuch, Camille Mantoani, Athena Koehler, Kaylie Barrera, Kira Lim, Brooke Chandler, LJ Webb, Alex Green, Lehua Murata and Jasmine Henley. They will compete against the top athletes from five states in the Region.

In the Xcel State championship, hosted at Burlingame, Carissa Stoudt, Xcel Silver, competed in the Junior D competition and received a sixth on Floor with a 9.15. She was eighth overall in the AA competition.

Mallory Anderson, Xcel Silver, competed in the Senior D competition, and received a sixth on Bars with a 9.10.

Lily Louden, Xcel Bronze, received a third on Bars with a 9.15 in Senior A competition. The Xcel team was coached by Erinn Van der Meer, Katelyn Chipman and Nick Walsh.

The REG boys flexed their gymnastics muscles at state with some stellar performances.

In the Level 4 competition, Sam Oryn was the gold medalist on Pommel Horse with a 10.60, Parallel Bar with a 11.00 and High Bar with a 11.10. He was also second AA with a 62.40 in the 9-year- old age group.

In the Level 5 competition, Sebastian Johnson was 21st on the Vault with a 8.95, in the 10-year-old age group, Leif Halstead was ninth on High Bars with a 10.10, in the 9-year-old age group, and Morgan Stump was second on Vault with a 9.50, and third AA with a 61.95 in the 8-year-old age group.

In addition in Level 5, Morgan Stump earned a place on the Nor Cal All Star Team. The All Star team members get to represent the top competitors in Northern California at Regional Championships. Morgan was selected from the top six All Around competitors from each division in Levels 5-10.

In the Level 6 competition, Devaun D’Haiti was the silver medalist on Rings with a 9.55, in the 10-year-old age group.

In the Level 7, Bryce Cannon was fifth on the High Bar with an 8.20, in the 12-year-old age group, and Farron Lourens was eighth on Pommel Horse with a 9.90, in the 10-year-old age group.

In the 18-and-over age group, Jacob Atkins competed as a Level 8 and received the silver medal on Parallel Bars with an 11.70.

REG boys team coaches Nolan Watts and Eric Van der Meer will travel with the boys to Santa Clara to compete in the Regional Championships later this month.

Regional boys team qualifiers include Morgan Stump, Leif Halstead, Jacob Atkins, Farron Lourens, Bryce Cannon and Devaun D’Haiti.
