High temperatures, stronger winds prompt state fire warnings

With predictions of warmer temperatures and stronger winds, state fire officials are urging Californians to help prevent wildfires this Memorial Day weekend.

“Over the past several weeks we have experienced an increase in the number of wildfires,” said Cal Fire Director Ken Pimlott. “This weekend’s weather conditions will elevate our fire risk even higher, so we need everyone’s assistance ensuring they don’t spark a new wildfire.”

The agency reported it is increasing its firefighting staffing this weekend “as windy conditions are predicted to elevate fire danger across many areas of California.”

The National Weather Service forecasts high temperatures in the 80s for Santa Rosa over the three-day weekend. For the much of the Central Valley from Redding to Bakersfield, the highs are predicted to reach into the 90s.

Already this year state firefighters have battled 1,100 wildfires that charred more than 10,000 acres. Four thousand of those acres burned in the last week alone.

Those planning campfires on state and federal lands are required to have permits, which can be obtained at PreventWildfireCA.org/Permits. Campers should clear a 10-foot perimeter of grass and other debris, never leave the campfire unattended and ensure it is completely extinguished before leaving.
