A fire scorched the exterior of a Petaluma delicatessen Saturday night, causing about $40,000 in damage, a Petaluma fire official said.

The fire was reported about ?9:30 p.m. at the Steel Bear Deli in the 5100 block of Old Redwood Highway, Battalion Chief Jeff Holden said in a press release.

Firefighters found the front side of the building ablaze and had the fire under control in 45 minutes, he said.

The fire was mostly limited to an area between the building wall and an overhanging roof, but there was smoke and water damage inside the deli as well as damage from firefighting operations, Holden said.

The deli was closed at the time and no one was inside, firefighters said. Damage was estimated at $30,000 to the building and $10,000 to the contents.
