A Petaluma woman who was texting while driving in Rohnert Park struck a 12-year-old boy who was in a crosswalk, according to Rohnert Park police.

The boy was knocked onto the hood of her car and then thrown about 40 feet. He suffered a possible broken leg and various bumps and scrapes, police said.

The accident occurred around 3:45 p.m. Monday on Snyder Lane at Capri Way as the boy ran west across Snyder Lane.

Driver Sadie Sonntag, 38, was reading a text message while southbound in a Toyota Camry. By the time she looked up, she was not able to stop and collided with the boy, police said.

The boy was taken to Sutter Hospital for treatment. His name was not released because he is a minor.

Sonntag remained at the scene and was attending to the boy as police arrived.

The crash remained under investigation Tuesday but officers have determined distracted driving was the cause and alcohol was not a factor.
