A 51-year old woman died Friday after her car crashed into a ditch along a road south of Petaluma, the CHP said.

Heidi Griffin of Petaluma was driving alone westbound on San Antonio Road when her white GMC Terrain SUV veered off the road, drove through a barbed wire fence and crashed into a deep drainage ditch, Sgt. Andrew Henkens said.

Henkens said there were no other cars involved and no reported witnesses. The vehicle, which crashed east of I Street, was spotted by passing motorists who stopped to check on it and reported the crash at 5:28 p.m., he said.

Griffin, who appears not to have been wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead shortly after the Petaluma Fire Department arrived, Henkens said.

Officials do not yet know how fast Griffin’s car was traveling or whether alcohol was a factor in the crash, Henkens said. Anyone who witnessed the crash should call the CHP at 707-588-1400.
