A fire scorched a Petaluma home on Wednesday, causing an estimated $70,000 in damage, according to the Petaluma Fire Department.

The blaze, at 127 McNear Circle, started just after noon on the second floor of the two-story house. Units from Petaluma Fire, Wilmar Fire, Rancho Adobe Fire, Sonoma Fire and Lakeville Fire responded to the scene, where smoke and flames were coming from a second story window.

The home was occupied by a male resident, who was asleep at the time of the fire, according to a press release. The resident was able to exit the home with only minor smoke inhalation. He was not transported to a hospital.

Fire officials noted that all smoke detectors in the residence had been removed. There was a sprinkler system in the home that activated in the upstairs laundry closet and partially extinguished the fire, allowing the occupant time to exit the upstairs bedroom.

The home was left uninhabitable, and the fire did an estimated $50,000 in damage to the structure and $20,000 in damage to property, fire officials said.
