Phone scam seeks credit card numbers

Scammers targetting newspaper subscribers|

A robocall phone scam is targeting Petaluma Argus-Courier subscribers who are asked to provide their credit card numbers.

According to one Argus-Courier subscriber who was contacted by phone on Wednesday, a recorded message told her, “There is a problem with your credit card.” The subscriber was asked to press 1 to speak to a customer service representative, but she hung up and immediately contacted the newspaper. She reported that when her phone rang the caller ID showed “Petaluma Argus.”

According to John Burns, publisher for the Argus-Courier, the call was part of a scam that has been reported to the Petaluma Police Department. “We never phone our customers with a recorded message. This was an illegal attempt to obtain credit card information, plain and simple.”

Subscribers who receive such calls are advised to ignore them.
