Free family bicycling workshop at McNear School

Bicycling workshop aimed at keeping kids and families safe on the roads.|

Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition’s Safe Routes to School Program will offers a free family bicycling workshop in Petaluma on April 7.

The Petaluma workshop one of several being held throughout the county, will be April 7 at McNear Elementary School, 605 Sunnyslope Ave, It will be from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

The Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition’s free family bicycling workshop offers parents and kids the opportunity to gain bicycling skills and confidence in a fun, safe and supervised environment.

The first portion of each workshop takes place on blacktop where adults and children receive instruction on safe cycling strategies and practice riding through drills and maneuvers.

The second portion of each workshop consists of a supervised 1 to 2-mile neighborhood bicycle ride, where family members receive real world experience riding with traffic under the guidance of experienced League of American Bicyclist Certified bicycling instructors.

Parents and children must participate in the workshop together, and participating children must be able to ride a bike and be ready take the road with their parents.

All participants must bring working bicycles and helmets.

The project is funded in part by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission Spare the Air Youth Program, the Measure M Transportation tax, Congestion Mitigation Air Quality funds and the City of Sonoma.
