4,000 more acres gone to Ranch fire

Firefighters Monday night set miles of backfires while battling the stubborn Ranch fire, according to Cal Fire.|

Tuesday’s early assessment of the Ranch fire, burning primarily in Lake County, showed more than 4,000-acres growth since Monday, according to Cal Fire, putting it at 355,612 acres.

Containment on the megafire, which is burning in Lake, Colusa, Glenn and Mendocino counties, was 67 percent, Cal Fire said Tuesday.

The fire continued to burn at the north end in steep terrain, scorching grass, timber and brush, officials said. Firefighters set more than nine miles of backfires, which are used to eliminate fuel in the fire’s path and improve containment lines.

The Ranch fire has burned since July 27, starting in Mendocino County near the Lake County line. At the same time, the River fire also started in Mendocino County near the county line and the two fires spread east. The River fire is fully contained and burned 48,920 acres.

About 3,600 people remain on the firefighting effort.

In Shasta County, the Carr fire Tuesday morning was at 229,651 acres with 90 percent containment. About 1,900 firefighters remain on that blaze.
