Fire agencies quickly extinguished a half-acre vegetation fire at the end of McNear Peninsula near downtown Petaluma Friday afternoon, according to a press release.

At 12:39 p.m., members of a Lakeville Fire unit that were shopping nearby spotted a brush fire close to the Petaluma River and reported the blaze to Petaluma Fire, the release said.

Several units responded, including Cal Fire, and utilized the walking path to the River Heritage Center, quickly dousing the flames before it spread.

No structures were burned or threatened, and there were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

Witnesses saw two people fleeing the scene after the fire began, the release said. The fire is still under investigation.
