A majority of respondents to a recent Argus-Courier online poll said they will not vote to approve $9 billion worth of bonds for California schools. Almost 80 percent said they would vote “no” on the measure, Prop. 51, on the November ballot.

Here are some comments:

--

“What happened to the lottery money that was for schools?”

--

“Yes, but only if the money goes to public schools and not charter schools.”

--

“I am taxed out. Most of my bonds already go to education. When will it end?”

--

“I see what the last passing of a school bond got us. A surplus in state budget spent on money for socialist programs not originally intended by the voters. State bonds under the guise for schools, public safety and socialist programs only mean extra money used as blank checks by state legislatures.”

--

“No, until we can see exactly where the money actually goes. To our children’s education, then yes. Bring back bus rides for free to all of our students, yes. Bring back driver’s education classes, yes. Line the pockets of teachers union officials or others, no.”

--

“No. Bonds have to be repaid somehow. This is just putting off and increasing the overall cost. We have all of these problems in the state from an aging infrastructure that needs a massive amount of money to fix.”

--

“Fine to spend more money on education, but not at the cost of additional taxes or “fees.” Take money out of that stupid bullet train to nowhere. We already have too much taxation and wasteful spending.”

--

“Schools waste the bond money from on high. It makes no sense to purchase iPads that last less than three years with 30-year bond money. It is like taking out a home mortgage and buying your daily groceries with the money. Reform is needed, not more money.”

--

“Unfortunately most people reading this poll don’t realize what the sale of $9 billion in bonds means so they simply vote ‘yes’ because it looks as if it won’t affect them personally. Of course in reality it does.”

--

“Schools are failing. The more we give the more they fail.”

--

“It’s got to slow down. Bring more people to the U.S. that we, as taxpayers, support is not the way to go. Our streets are bad, traffic is worse than ever and cities want to build more. More garbage, more police, firemen, it goes on and on. Soon our county will be a huge San Jose. What’s next?”

--

“Prop. 13 needs to be overturned so that all property owners pay their share. The gas tax for road repair needs to be throw out and a new system that everybody pays their fair share gets implemented. Most importantly, we need to stop electing only those who are in the pockets of developers on the local level and big business on the state levels.”
