A majority of respondents to a recent Argus-Courier online poll said they will not vote for Prop. 58, which would allow for more bilingual education in California. More than 70 percent said they would vote “no” on the measure on the November ballot.

Here are some comments:

--

“Children with a good bilingual education learn English better.”

--

“Definitely not. When we make it a requirement that immigrants learn English before becoming U.S. citizens, then I might consider it.”

--

“English is supposed to be our language, our only language.”

--

“If you’re going to ask this question, then you should be prepared to print honest answers without yelling racist. I’m sick and tired of paying the educational costs for tens of thousands of Hispanic immigrants. I’ll be a ‘no’ vote.”

--

“Live in the United States, speak English.”

--

“Putting more resources into teaching children English would be more effective than increasing the length of bilingual education. Non-English-speaking parents should be encouraged to learn English themselves, as it opens up much better employment opportunities for them.”

--

“To compete in the world economy, today’s youth must be bilingual.”

--

“Way too much money is already spent on bilingual education in California schools already. How about keeping them English only? This is America right?”

--

“We need to teach our kids English.”

--

“We will not vote for more bilingual education in the public schools. English is our official language. The schools should be teaching to preserve our English language and American culture, history and values.”
