In a controversial move, President Barack Obama established his own immigration reform after Congress repeatedly failed to pass a bill on the issue. The plan would allow millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States to stay legally if they have children who are American citizens and they do not have a criminal history. Most of those who took part in this week’s unofficial online poll did not agree with the move. Here were some of the comments:

“Who will pay for this? Why, we will. Will undocumented immigrants strive to learn English and assimilate into the American culture?”

--

“We should probably trade some of the undesirable U.S. citizens for the hard working, honest undocumented immigrants. This would be a plus.”

--

“Too many executive orders - let the government work. He was elected to office, not ordained.”

--

“It’s so long overdue. Now to make a difference by furthering their educational successes, economic security and social integration.”

--

“Legal immigration should be easier, but this seems like rewarding illegal immigration.”

--

“I think what bothers me most is that the President doesn’t care that the majority of Americans are against this. Sitting in Washington he has no idea what this immigration problem has done to the average American and how it has changed the values of America.”

--

“It’s a slap in the face to those who came here legally. He’s not a king, he should represent the nation as a whole and he doesn’t.”

--

“He has the constitutional authority to enact an executive order, but the timing was irresponsible. It appears that he is thumbing his nose at the Congress. The president should have met with Congress and if they rebuffed him then he should move.”

--

“We might as well just have a monarchy.”

--

“Most of our families at one time immigrated to the US. The only difference is most of our ancestors went through the immigration and naturalization process becoming legal citizens.”

--

“Congress makes laws like this, not the president. Then again, the president cannot by law send troops into battle unless Congress declares war. Nobody in Washington seems to care to follow the law, so why should I care now?”

--

“What about the U.S. citizens who are veterans? Why should we pay $49 billion per year for people who don’t follow the rules and don’t want to pay taxes by going through the proper channels? They should spend the billions on U.S. citizens who need it most.”
