Respondents to this week’s Argus-Courier poll apparently believe that adults know what’s best for them.

When asked if they favor a proposed state law mandating that all adult bicyclists wear protective helmets, 58.5 percent of readers said they oppose the legislation.

The survey revealed that 38.1 percent do favor the legislation that would force adults 18 years of age and older to wear helmets.

Some readers who voted oppose the legislation, but feel that adults should choose to wear the protective helmet.

“Absolutely not. The government forces healthcare on us then uses it to control and restrict our lives by saying it cost taxpayers money if you’re allowed to ride a bicycle without a helmet. This is a classic example of what liberals try to do in order to control everyday lives of the citizens.

“The more entitlements the government gives you the more the government feels they are entitled to tell you how to live. Keep voting in liberals and you’ll see more and more of this type of fascist control.”

--

“Absolutely! Simple safety precaution.”

“At the point of adulthood it becomes a choice to wear a helmet. You are told your whole childhood of the importance of wearing a helmet, seen the pictures, been told the stories of saved lives by helmets and lives that could have been saved if one was worn etc.

“Bottom Line: Under age 18 helmet required. 18-and-over, you know best and should make the right choice, but there does not need to be a law made out of it.”

“I think adults who choose not to wear helmets while riding bikes are idiots. I point that out to my kids all the time.”
