A majority of respondents in an online Argus-Courier poll said California should get rid of daylight saving time. More than 50 percent said the state should scrap the time switch, while about 30 percent said the state should move permanently to daylight saving time.

Here are some comments:

--

“As much as I’d like to keep daylight saving time, we don’t need to be operating in a different time zone than the rest of the West coast.”

--

“Because I work full days indoors, I cherish the extra daylight in the warming spring and summer evenings. Plus, in the winter, extra daylight for the very early morning commute is great as well. Keep it the way it is.”

--

“Daylight saving time was reinstated during WWII to save energy, but it has been proven to just shift energy usage from evening to morning with a small net energy increase for extra lighting for schools and daytime-only businesses. Jimmy Carter tried a permanent daylight saving time during the energy embargo in the 70’s. It was a disaster. Elementary school kids were going to school in the dark and getting run over daily.”

--

“Eliminate the Pacific and Eastern time zones and have just two time zones in U.S. This is a proposal that has been presented a number of times.”

--

“I’d rather get up in the dark and have more evening light.”

--

“I’m still an hour behind from five years ago, that’s how messed up daylight saving time is.”

--

“I absolutely love daylight saving time. I hate getting up before dawn, and I love being able to work outside past 7 p.m. I remember way back - late 1960’s maybe - when we stayed on DST one winter. It was a big mess that December with sunrise at almost 8:30 a.m. Very dangerous for school kids. ”

--

“I find it very disruptive, both physically and psychologically, to switch time zones twice a year. I would love it if we could settle on one system - standard time or daylight time - and stick to it year-round.”

--

“It’s unhealthy to have millions of people walking and driving around with jet lag for a week.”

--

“Just leave it alone. There will always be a certain amount of people that aren’t happy with it. Do we not have more important things to worry about?”

--

“Keep daylight saving time as it is. It’s wonderful for those like me who aren’t morning people.”

--

“Keep it the way it is. Longer light in the evening hours means less electricity, which should mean more savings on PG&E.”

--

“Leave this program the way it is. Why is it that the government has to meddle with something working perfectly fine? All it takes is one misfit making a complaint and the government sticks its nose into it. Most people think this program is perfectly fine and has positive meaning as to why it is done. Why not let the majority prevail?”

--

“Only the government thinks that cutting a foot off the top of a blanket and sewing it to the bottom gives you a longer blanket.”

--

“The added light later in the day is so important, especially for us working people.”

--

“There is no valid reason to continue daylight saving time. The time change increases health risks such as heart attacks and strokes. Changing the clocks twice a year is economically and socially disruptive, and makes no sense.”

--

“What could be better than daylight when you get home? It’s light when I go to work and it’s light when I get home so I can do outside gardening and go for a walk or just enjoy being outside after being locked up in an office all day. Kids can enjoy being outside playing instead of being indoors on their butts. It’s a win-win.”

--

“The considering alone will take years. Getting rid of it or moving permanently will take more years. It’s a waste of time and money. Just leave it alone and move on to something that matters.”

--

“I don’t like waking up in the dark, but I do like coming home from work when it’s still light out.”

--

“If California switches, Oregon, Washington and Nevada would have to switch too.”
