A majority of respondents to a recent Argus-Courier online poll said they will not vote for Prop. 67, which would outlaw single-use plastic bags in California. Almost 60 percent said they would vote “no” on the measure on the November ballot.

Here are some comments:

--

“For vegetables and fruit, or just in general? I would vote to outlaw the Styrofoam meat trays. Thin plastic bags are still needed to prevent bacteria contamination, especially these days. Need I say more.”

--

“I prefer to shame commercial enterprises into using more eco-friendly bags. I hate the ban in Sonoma County. Guess what, due to the local ban I am buying rolls of plastic bags for household use, whereas before I used to reuse the plastic bags given to me at the stores. If someone invented affordable eco-friendly bags to use around the house I would buy them.”

--

“Our world is facing big ecological problems. This is something really small that we could all do. Not a big deal to use paper or use your own bag.”

--

“Since we moved to California a year ago, I’ve become quite accustomed to carrying around reusable bags in the trunk of my car. Once you get used to it, it’s not inconvenient at all. And given the destructive environmental impact of plastic bags, I think the time has come to retire them.”

--

“Talk about government micro-managing American citizens’ lives based upon the belief of the elite liberals. Another crazy idea by the liberals after eliminating all fireplaces, eliminating all garbage disposals so all food stuffs go towards compost, and on and on and on.”

--

“They are not single-use.”

--

“This anti-plastic bag policy is only a feel-good rule. There are literally thousands of other items worse than plastic bags. This is just an easy way to make people feel better thus doing almost nothing for the environment. I, like most people, recycle all my plastic bags. Disposable diapers are thousands of times worse for our environment. The only reason they won’t ban them is because of the public outcry if they tried. As for paper vs. plastic, manufacturing paper bags is much worse for the environment. Just Google it if you don’t believe it.”

--

“This is more important than ever before, since our garbage collectors no longer accept plastic bags for recycling. Now all our plastic bags end up in a landfill.”

--

“This should be left up to local jurisdictions. Sonoma County already passed a plastic bag ban. Local governments should decide this, not Sacramento.”

--

“Plastic bags are the worst. Why do we need them, anyway?”
