A majority of respondents in an online Argus-Courier poll said that they would vote for a tax on cannabis cultivation in Sonoma County. Sonoma County supervisors this month called a special election for March to ask voters to impose new taxes on the cultivation and sale of marijuana. Nearly 70 percent of respondents said they would vote for the measure.

Here are some comments:

“Commercial marijuana is coming, like it or not. As for a tax? Dedicate it road repairs. Just don’t let any sneaky language into the law to divert the money like all the other road taxes have had. Imagine having nice roads again, and no new tax for it unless you’re a cannabis user.”

“If the county put the tax to good use, perhaps I would consider it. But the addition and increase of taxes that never get put to good use leads me to believe this is a waste.”

“We have enough youth addicted to drugs in Sonoma County without encouraging it. Accepting tax receipts is accepting, and condoning these dope dealers.”

“We should maximize the tax to offset all associated costs and then some. Marijuana cultivation tax should be a large net revenue generator for the city, county and state.”

“Tax, tax, tax. It never seems to be enough, does it? And who knows where the money goes? Sometime down the road we get the word that we have failed to maintain the infrastructure. And what is the answer? More tax. That huge sucking sound is your pleasant life and retirement going down the drain.”

“The criminals who will move large amounts of weed for sale, will do so and sell it and not pay any taxes. The small person who is not a criminal will have to pay their taxes or else. No on taxing marijuana.”

“Well the county just banned rural marijuana cultivation and it certainly should be banned in rural areas, due to the noxious odor, so no marijuana should be grown in Sonoma County period.”

“I prefer that it’s not grown at all. The smell makes me sick.”
