Both Trojans and Gauchos slip in Callan Tournament

Petaluma’s Trojans came apart in the second half and lost to Fairfield, 70-55. Tournament host Casa Grande fell behind early and never caught up, losing its chance to play for the tournament title to Washington of San Francisco, 51-36.

Also on Friday, Cardinal Newman shot its way into the championship game, beating Windsor, 57-46, and Miramonte downed Analy, 61-53.

In today’s final round, Petaluma will try to salvage a win at 1:30 p.m. against Analy, Miramonte plays Fairfield for the consolation championship at 3 p.m., Casa Grande goes against Windsor for the consolation title at 4:30 p.m. and Cardinal Newman meets Washington for the championship at 6 p.m.

In Friday’s first game, Petaluma played Fairfield to a standoff in the first half, and led at the intermission, 28-27. but late in the third quarter the Falcons went on a 14-0 run to blow the game open. Senior guard Uriah Benning led Fairfield with 18 points. Ryan Cox had his best game of the season for the Trojans, scoring 20 points. Ben Sanderson, Petaluma’s season-leading scorer, added 13, but left the game in the third quarter with an ankle injury.

Casa Grande had no answer for George Washington’s long-range shooting Eagles. Washington jumped out to a 24-8 opening quarter lead and the game and the championship contest participant were decided. Darren Ho outside and Ernest Moore inside lead the balanced Eagles with 10 points apiece. Jon Cristy continued his outstanding tournament with 19 points and eight rebounds for the Gauchos. Point guard Tommy Buickerood hit a trio of 3-pointers for nine Casa points.
