Russell third in Windsor tourney

Noah Russell defeated both the No. 1 and No.|

Noah Russell defeated both the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in his weight class to highlight Petaluma High School efforts in the Windsor Prince of the Mat wrestling tournament. Russell, who went into the tournament unseeded, finished third in the 140-pound weight class.

He opened with a 5-2 decision over Skyler McKnight of Hoopa and then won an exciting 8-7 decision over Gabe Freeman of Lower Lake and followed with an impressive 9-4 decision over Eric Blood of Paradise. In the semifinals he lost to No. 3 seed Luke Au-Yeans of Windsor. He bounced back to win the third place match with a 5-3 decision over Alex Garcia of Arch-Bishop Hanna, who went into the competition as the No. 1 seed in the weight class.

Tyler Sullivan at 122 pounds took a seventh with a 2-2 record that included a pin.

Eric Machado and Dan Pacheco both finished eighth. Machado, at 154 pounds, was 2-2 win both pins coming via pins. Pacheco was 1-3 in the heavyweight class.

Sophomore jack Reynolds didn’t place, but had a good 2-2 win in a loaded 126-pound weight class, recording both his wins with pins.

A pair of freshmen, Dominic Ayers and Jack Thompson, also competed for the Trojans, with Ayers, in the 134-pound class, winning a match with a pin.

Pacheco finished second in the junior varsity competition before wrestling for the varsity on the second day of the tournament.

Also in junior varsity competition, Curtis Goughenour was 1-2 with a pin; Pete Strandos was second at 154 pounds, finishing with a 2-1 record; and Max Gegian had a 1-2 record.
