Winning men’s lighweight rowing team leads NBRC
The North Bay Rowing Club kicked off its spring racing season last week at the Shamrock Invitational in Redwood City. The event brought teams from as far away as Seattle to compete on the 2000-meter racecourse at Redwood Shores.
Crews competed in a round-robin format on the three-lane course allowing each boat to race several times against different competitors.
“This race course is one of the best in our region for determining our boat speed,” said NBRC coach Will Whalen. “I think the squad performed really well for their first race.”
North Bay raced in five boat classes, two men’s and three for the women. “The kids raced really hard in all the events. The times that they posted are the by far the fastest I have ever seen at this club,” said Whalen. “It’s great to see the incredible amount of work they put in over the winter pay off.”
The highlight of the weekend was a victory in the men’s lightweight 4+ (Bradley Hogin, Logan Wheaton, John Gause, Nick Caruso, Elek Sasway). Building an early lead, they pushed out to a full boat length advantage by the midpoint of the race, and held the lead despite a hard charge from the other crews.
North Bay will be back in action this weekend at the Pacific Invitational on Lake Merced in San Francisco. It will be a full squad event with 18 entries over two days.
