Bantams second in junior-high mat finals

Petaluma wins 3 titles individually, places second overall to?Windsor|

Petaluma Junior High School crowned three league champions, but came up short in its quest for the North Valley League title.

The Bantams went into the league tournament needing to win to tie Windsor for the overall league championship, but finished second behind Windsor and had to settle for second place in the league standings. Windsor won the tournament with 136 points, with Petaluma second with 111, followed by Healdsburg with 71, Kenilworth with 66, Lawrence Jones with 64 and Altimira with 64.

Petaluma did have two varsity champions and one junior varsity champion.

Connor Pedersen completed an undefeated (11-0) season by taking the title in the 106-pound class. Pedersen defeated Kenilworth’s Aaron Kapensky, 7-2, in his championship match.

Heavyweight Alex Azanon recorded two straight pins after accepting a bye to claim his title. He finished the season with an 11-1 record and tied for the team lead with six pins.

Dax Hogya took the junior varsity title at 94 pounds in a weight class swept by Petaluma with Nadia Petrovic second and Larissa Thompson third.

Ashton Taylor took second at 89 pounds.

Dominic Butts was second for Petaluma in the varsity 94-pound class with a 2-1 record. He finished 10-1 for the season with five pins.

Colton Prieto finished second at 127 pounds, losing to Trent Silva of Windsor by a 17-1 tech fall in the finals. Silva is the only wrestler to beat Prieto during a 6-2 season.

Tony Vitale was second at 133 pounds in the conclusion to an 8-2 season.

Jose Villanova was second at 196 pounds.

Derek Pomi was second in that weight class in the junior varsity competition.

Tristen Schmid also took a junior varsity second.

Matt Shattuck was third in the varsity 99-pound class, ending his season with a 9-2 record and tying for the most pins on the Bantams with six.

Isaac Rangle was third at 176 pounds to finish 7-2 on the season.

Sarah Cook-Markovich, wrestling up a weight class, took third at 166 pounds.
