The steadily improving Petaluma Lady Trojans won two league games last week, defeating Windsor, 17-5 and losing to Rancho Cotate, 17-6.

Petaluma took control of the opening draw against Windsor, and the first goal of the game was scored by freshman Nicole Walker. After Windsor tied the game at 1-1, Grace Spaletta responded with two consecutive goals for Petaluma, assisted by Tiernan Settles and Nichole Costa.

Windsor continued to battle, with back-and-forth scoring efforts by both teams resulting in a 4-4 tie late in the first half. The Lady Trojans took control of the game with additional scores by Walker, Costa and Settles to close the half with a 7-4 lead.

The second half was all Petaluma, as the Jaguars were only able to muster one additional goal to the Trojans’ 10. Scoring totals included five each for Spaletta, three apiece for Settles and Costa, and one tally for freshman Kathryn Wood.

Draw control was a key factor in the game, with the Trojans winning possession 75 percent of the time.

Solid defense that caused turnovers and maintained possession was provided by sophomores Gina Maddelena and Emily Herbst along with freshmen Brittany Tomrose and Zoe Tiller. Sarah Graham recorded six saves in the cage for Petaluma.

The game opened well for Petaluma against Rancho Cotate, with the Lady Trojans taking an early 2-0 lead on goals from Spaletta and senior Taylor Forslind. Despite a valiant defensive effort, including an interception by Whitney Royall, the Cougars were able to take advantage, and won the game by a final score of 17-6.

Top scorers for the Trojans were Settles and Costa, with two apiece, with Wood and Costa providing assists.
