REG gymnasts shine in state

In the world of competitive gymnastics, November is championship meet season for compulsory level athletes Level 3 to Level 5. At Redwood Empire Gymnastics, the compulsory teams, coached by Tara Lanatti and Nick Walsh, ventured out to show off their gymnastics talents in three different state championships held this month.

The Level 5 state championships, hosted by Oroville Gymnastics, in Oroville, occured the first weekend in November. All of Redwood Empire Level 5’s were skilled enough to qualify for the state championship meet. The REG Level 5 team includes: Shanti Adams, Ellie Hall, Molly Retterer, Isabel Eskes, Natalia Cuyler, Siena Bertacco, Natalya Gigliello, Maia Chase and Ella Nixon.

In the Junior A competition, Siena Bertacco placed fifth on floor (9.075) and tied for 12th in the all around competition. For Junior B, Isabel Eskes came in first in the all-around competition with a 37.025 and was also second on beam and floor in her age group. Natalya Gigliello, in the Junior C division, placed third on the vault (9.325) and was seventh in the all around. In the Senior B age group, Ellie Hall placed fifth on floor (9.225) and Molly Retterer was seventh on the balance beam (9.05). They were sixth and eighth respectively in the all around competition.

In the Senior C age group, Natalia Cuyler was the vault state champion (9.425), and also was the bars state champion (9.225). Maia Chase, in the Senior D age group, was sixth on floor (9.15) and was also sixth in the all around. In the Senior E age group, Shanti Adams was third on bars (9.1) and was fifth in the all around. Out of 59 teams competing at the Level 5 state meet, Redwood Empire Gymnastics came in 12th place overall.

The second weekend of November brought the Level 4 North State Championships, hosted by Technique gymnastics in Folsom. The Level 4 team consists of Haven Koehler, Elizabeth Snyder, Mia Sereni, Brooklyn Labo, Macey Newbold, Megan Popielak, Amelia Cosci, Isabella Toner-Rodgers and Kenzie Marks. At the Level 4 state Championships, the REG girls placed ninth out of the 47 competing teams.

In the Junior F competition, Haven Koehler received a silver medal on vault (9.1) and was second in the all around (36.375). Macy Newbold, also in the Junior F age group, was fourth on floor (9.30) and sixth on vault (8.85). In the Junior H competition, Mia Sereni was crowned the all-around champion (36.975) and also was second on beam (9.175). Brooklyn Labo, also a Junior H, was the silver medalist on floor (9.45) and was ninth in the AA competition. In the Senior D competition, Elizabeth Snyder was the gold medalist on vault (9.75), and was second in the all-around competition (37.35). In the Senior F age group, Megan Popielak was sixth on bars (9.0), and placed 12th in the all-around.

In the third weekend of November, the Level 3 North State Championship meet took place in Livermore, was hosted by California Gymnastics Academy. The Level 3 team consists of Grace Sheehan, Sadie Greenberg, Mira Grover, Nola Valceschini, Soraya Rostocil, Annabella Cosci, Layla O’Connor, Amelia Krieshok, Jasmine Greenlief-Gibbs, Haley Fenyves, Kathryn Samford and Mariah Affonso. In the Child D competition, Nola Valceschini was 12th on beam (8.55) and 15th in the AA. Soraya Rostocil, in the Child G competition, was eighth on vault (9.225) and 12th AA. In the Junior C age group, Annabella Cosci was fourth on vault (9.4) and seventh in the AA. Layla O’Connor, Junior D, was the silver medalist on vault (9.575) and 16th in the AA. In the Junior G age group, Amelia Krieshok was the vaulting champion (9.45) and was 11th in the AA. Jasmine Greenlief-Gibbs, in Junior H, was the vault gold medalist (9.40) and was the second in the AA competition. In the Senior A age group, Haley Fenyves was seventh on bars (8.725) and ninth AA, and Mariah Affonso was the bronze medalist on floor (9.275) and 17th in the AA. In the Senior D age group, Kathryn Samford was second on beam (9.175) and eighth in the AA competition.
