Unbelievable! Three games, three no-hitters

St. Vincent starts NCL II baseball season with three straight no-hitters.|

It was a near-perfect week for St. Vincent High School baseball pitchers. St. Vincent won three straight no-hit, no-run games against North Central League II opponents, one a perfect game. The Mustangs allowed just three base runners combined in the three games.

Liam Galten, David Sammon and Jake Pullan combined to beat Technology, 13-0, in a five-inning game. Trevor Bovaird and Jack Romano combined for a perfect five-inning (18-0) win over Archbishop Hanna and Dominic Pedersen went the seven-inning distance in a 2-0 victory over Upper Lake. All three no-nos were accomplished on the road.

Against Technology, Galten faced six batters in two innings, retiring all six, three by strikeout. Sammon struck out two in a perfect inning and Pullan walked two and struck out two in two innings.

St. Vincent collected 10 singles from eight different batters to score its 13 runs. Alex Dombrowski and Bradley Leach led the way with two hits apiece with Leach driving in three runs, as did Nick Vollert.

Against Archbishop Hanna, Bovaird pitched the first two innings for the win. He walked none and struck out three. Romano completed the perfect game, striking out five of the nine batters he faced over the final three innings.

At the plate, St. Vincent again had 10 hits, led by Pedersen, who was 4-for-4 with a pair of triples. He went 7-for-11 in the three games, scored four runs and knocked in six. He also hit a foul ball that landed in a turn-about on the outside of the field.

Leach had two more hits in that game.

Pedersen turned in the best performance in a week of spectacular pitching, coming within one walk of perfection in the seven-inning win over Upper Lake.

Pedersen dominated the Cougars, striking out 11.

For the first time in league play, the Mustangs had trouble hitting, but a run in the third inning on Pedersen’s double followed by Galten’s double; and another in the fifth on a David Sammon single, a Dombrowski double and a ground out were more than enough for Pedersen.

St. Vincent might have gotten more runs in the third had the Upper Lake left fielder not made a spectacular running catch to rob Vollert of extra bases following Galten’s double.

The big week not only jump-started the Mustangs to a 3-0 league start, but improved their overall record to 10-3.
