Trojans tough, but beaten by Sonoma

Petaluma made it close in every match, but lost the SCL tennis showdown to Sonoma Valley.|

The final team score doesn’t nearly reflect how close Petaluma High School’s Trojans came to earning a share of the Sonoma County League tennis championship.

The Trojans lost on their home courts to Sonoma Valley’s Dragons, 5-2, last week. The loss was only the second in SCL play for the Trojans. Both defeats came to the league unbeaten Dragons. A win would have earned Petaluma a title share.

Although Petaluma won just one singles and one doubles match, every match was tightly contested, with little to chose between the players.

Typical of the kind of team contest it turned out to be was the cliff-hanging No. 1 singles match between Petaluma’s Nathan Wong and Sonoma’s Matt McKale. Wong won the first set, 6-2, but McKale came back to take the second, 4-6, leading up to Wong’s big 6-4 third set and match victory.

The No. 2 singles match was equally exciting, but with a less favorable result for the Trojans as Sonoma’s Dylan Berg prevailed over Zach Leno, 7-5. 2-6, 6-3.

Sonoma won the No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches in straight sets, but both were tightly played with Eric Serbick stopping Adam Volk, 6-3, 6-2, while Liam Handron beat John Camp, 6-3, 6-0.

Doubles matches were equally competitive.

At No. 1, Sonoma’s Ben Rogoli and Miles Pimentel held off Hayden Dennis and Jack Anderson, 6-2, 4-6 and 6-4.

At No. 2 doubles, Sonoma won an equally hard-fought match over Sam Rosloff and Carlos Bagarin, 6-4, 7-5.

Petaluma prevailed at No. 3 doubles with Vince Bermont and Connor Gors defeating Ben Finley and Sam Weisiger, 6-4, 6-3.
