Mustangs slip, but are still NCL II champions

St. Vincent High School’s baseball Mustangs stumbled in their final regular-season game, but they still reigned as North Central League II champions.

Playing on their home diamond, the Mustangs gave up four runs in the top of the seventh inning and were beaten by rival Sonoma Academy, 7-3. The loss finished the Mustang regular season at 18-6. It was their only league defeat of an 11-1 NCL II championship season. Sonoma Academy finished the regular season at 13-6 and second place in league at 10-2.

Sonoma Academy was clinging to a 3-2 lead after six innings but came up with the big rally in the top of the seventh. St. Vincent managed a run in the bottom of the inning, but could not come all the way back.

St. Vincent out-hit Sonoma Academy, 11-8, with Nick Vollert and Reilly Tobin both going 3-for-4 and Bradley Leach picking up two hits.

Liam Galten pitched six innings for the Mustangs, allowing three runs on four hits with five walks with seven strikeouts. Leach took the brunt of the Sonoma Academy sixth-inning rally, giving up four runs on four hits and three walks.

Dylan DeLaMontanya and Oscar McCauley had two hits each for Sonoma Academy.

Before getting to Sonoma Academy, St. Vincent easily handled rival Tomales, 19-0, breaking open a five-inning game with nine runs in the fourth inning.

Dominic Petersen pitched the Mustangs’ fifth no-hitter of the season -and his second no-hitter - with two walks and 11 strikeouts.

The Mustangs collected 12 hits, accepted seven walks and took advantage of five Tomales errors.

Leach and Galten each had three hits for St. Vincent, and Vollert and Michael Davis had two hits each.
