Former Petaluma High School swimmer Riley Scott continues to swim in a highly competitive pool as she heads to Omaha, Neb., next week to compete in the USA Swimming Olympic Trials.

Scott has qualified for the trials in the 100-meter breaststroke, the 200-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter individual medley. Qualifications are based on times set every four years by USA Swimming.

The event will be televised nationally on NBC and NBCSN as the nation’s best swimmers compete for a spot on the US Olympic team. More than 1,800 athletes have qualified for the trials, but only the top two finishers in each individual event qualify for the Olympic team that will compete in Rio de Janeiro in August.

Scott has just completed her freshman year at USC, where she helped her team win the first Pac-12 championship in school history and finish seventh in the NCAA championships.

She has spent the spring at the university, attending class and training for the trials under USC head coach Dave Salo.

The trials come after a spectacular first college season for the Petaluman who earned NCAA All-American honors in the 400-yard medley relay.

At the Pac-12 championships, she was second in the 100-yard breaststroke, second in the 200-yard breaststroke and eighth in the 200-yard individual medley. In addition, she swam on the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relay teams that both finished third.

During the season, she had three individual wins in a USC triumph over UC Berkeley and was named USC Student Athlete of the week for that performance.

She had four personal best times during the season.

While at Petaluma High, she was named to seven high school All-American teams and was a two-time North Coast Section champion.

She also swam for the Marin Pirates where she was coached by Warren Lager and Tom Evans.
