The Petaluma Leghorn American Legion baseball team made a successful journey to Chico for its first tournament of the summer season, finishing third in the Chico Father’s Day Classic.

Petaluma lost its first game to host Chico, 4-1, but then ran off four straight victories.

After losing their opener, the Leghorns defeated Sacramento Easton, 6-2; the Westside Braves, 11-1, in a game shortened to four innings by rain; the Reno Knights, 9-3; and Yolo, 5-3.

Outfielder Luke Wheless, shortstop Logan Douglas, pitcher Sean McElroy and pitcher/outfielder Carson Snyder were named to the All-Tournament team.

“One of our goals is to get tougher as a team, and we showed a lot of traits of becoming a tough team,” said Leghorn coach Casey Gilroy. “The last win over Yolo was a tribute to our toughness.”

Now 8-2 on the season, the Leghorns continue a rigorous road trip this week playing in the John Anderson Tournament in Reno, where they will face Chaffey from Ontario, Fairfield, Reno, Yakima and Wooster High from Santa Clara, playing six games in six days in a city where the temperature has been pushing 100 degrees.

“We will be playing some extremely good teams, but that’s what the summer is for,” said Gilroy.
